Small Business Weekend at Pocket Change

Change Today, Change Tomorrow (CTCT) announced a new initiative to bring Black business to the heart of Butchertown. The organization acquired its first retail space to house Pocket Change, a hub for budding Black businesses to bloom. Pocket Change provides local Black owned businesses a storefront residency to gain exposure and increase their customer base. This weekend patrons can purchase bundle packages ranging from $50-100 including a variety of Black-owned items sold in-store. When customers bring in new toys to support Bless the Block, CTCT’s winter holiday giving program, they are entered into a product raffle as well.

Corey Thomas, a University of Louisville alum and member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has been appointed as Creative Director for Pocket Change. He comes with over ten years of retail experience, business management and service.

“Black Friday has always been at the benefit of white people, white dollars and big box retailers but this holiday season and until forever we’re asking that you change your spending to black businesses! In the black community we have so many talented individuals that fall under the radar due to the hype surrounding Black Friday. Small business Saturday is a time not only to support local but intentionally BUY Black!”

Taylor Ryan, Executive Director and Founder of CTCT spoke about the inspiration behind pursuing a business initiative as a social justice, non-profit organization: “At Change Today, Change Tomorrow we are being innovative in our approach to service. We want to bring a new perspective to the typical nonprofit ecosystem and provide barrier free access to local Black business owners.”

Change Today, Change Tomorrow’s created a call to action called #ChangeYourSpending to encourage people to redirect their dollars to local Black owned businesses. “Pocket Change is your one stop shop for all your holiday needs!” said Ryan. Pocket Change is located in the Butchertown neighborhood just around the corner from Change Today, Change Tomorrow’s home office. The hours of operation for this weekend are Saturday 12-8 PM and Sunday 12-6 PM. Open to the public. COVID-19 precautions will be practiced.
